Ashley Judd’s Heart Of Darkness - 10.31.2008

... It's been a little more than six months now since the American actress Ashley Judd caught a glimpse of her through the mud-streaked window of a battered car rattling toward Goma in eastern Congo. Today the headlines, mostly in the news-roundup columns, the "also in the world today" segments, say that tens of thousands of refugees are fleeing toward Goma, which already had so many. They are the miserable survivors of one of those wars the world hasn't quite forgotten, but just doesn't really give a damn about. Have a million people been killed there this decade? Actually, many more—

Call+Response - 10.13.2008
news icon

CALL+RESPONSE is a first of its kind feature documentary film that reveals the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in 2007, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.

Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it. callandresponse.com

Ashley Judd, others discuss Obama policy at Broadway bookstore - 09.15.2008
news icon

Fuel costs, birth control and transparency in government were issues that worked their way into a discussion between actress Ashley Judd, former U.S. senator Jean Carnahan and Melody Barnes, senior domestic policy adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, held Saturday at Broadway Books and Roasting Co. in Cape Girardeau...

Judd, a pro-choice advocate, also addressed the abortion issue, what she called a "divisive and polarizing issue in our society."

Allowing more ready access to birth control means reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies and thus cutting back on abortions, Judd said.

Judd, who also worked on the 2004 John Kerry presidential campaign, said she felt compelled to get involved with Obama's campaign after seeing him accept the Democratic nomination at the Democratic National Convention.

"I was inspired, and I was galvanized," she said.

Ashley speaks in Denver about women's issues - 08.28.2008

Ashley Judd, actor and activist, is in Denver for the DNC. Joining pro-choice activists, she traveled to a Cherry Creek neighborhood to talk about one of her most important causes, women's health and reproductive rights.

She has helped these causes since she was a college sorority girl at the University of Kentucky. One summer, she and a fellow Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sister drove cross country to see the nation. They stopped at Planned Parenthood clinics all along the way to help young girls who were being taunted by anti-abortion activists. This experience framed her future passions on women's health rights, attacking poverty around the world, and serving the sick and powerless in Africa. full story

A-list actress has speeding ticket from '93 - 08.25.2008

Hollywood actress Ashley Judd has never paid the fine for a speeding ticket she received in Dyer County in 1993.

Judd was stopped at 4:25 p.m. June 6 on I-155 around mile marker 6, after Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Robert Moore's radar clocked Judd's black Mercedes 300CE coupe zipping along at 87 mph in the 65-mph zone. She was passing another vehicle when radar tracked her at 22 mph over the speed limit.

"She asked me if I knew who she was," laughed Moore, recalling the stop. "I said it really didn't matter."

Judd told Moore the car was a recent gift from her mother, country singer Naomi Judd, and she was on her way to her Malibu, Calif. home.

Since Tennessee and California in 1993 had no reciprocity agreement for motor vehicle violations, Moore held Judd's driver's license to assure she either appeared in court or paid the $125 fine. The actress did neither. The license remains held.

Judd was relatively unknown at the time, but had started acting the month before in the first season of the NBC television series 'Sisters.'

Judd's publicist did not return calls seeking comment on the matter.

Ashley Judd says she decided to lend her voice against human trafficking after she "stumbled upon" the issue while visiting brothels, slums, hospices and other clinics in 12 nations to promote public health.

"I know that the unheard are helped when they are heard. General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim and United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash.

Judd, a two-time Golden Globe nominee whose screen credits include "De-Lovely" and "Kiss the Girls," also has used her celebrity to focus attention on HIV/AIDS prevention for young adults around the world. AIDS Orpahns make Judd think twice about starting a family - 05.31.2008
Actress Ashley Judd, 40, has been busy serving as a global ambassador for the YouthAIDS organization traveling throughout the world and witnessing first hand the number of orphans desperate for a family of their own. Ashley's experiences are making her think twice about having biological children with race car driver Dario Franchitti, 35. Ashley shared,

The fact that there are 25 million AIDS orphans makes it hard to decide [to have kids]. The fact that 11 million children will die this year before reaching their fifth birthdays makes it hard. We should be providing for the ones who are here.

YouthAIDS is an education and prevention program of the international NGO Population Services International (PSI) promoting AIDS prevention and treatment. Ashley has been serving as a global ambassador for the organization since 2002.

Ruby in Paradise, Forgotten? - 05.12.2008

"As hard as it is for me to write, I think it might be time to call Victor Nunez’s RUBY IN PARADISE a Forgotten Film.

It is 2008 and, even with the career that star Ashley Judd has had, it has yet to be released on DVD. In the past year, RUBY has been shown on the Sundance Channel, but it went several years without any TV airings. I don’t know how many have heard of it, or remember it..."
