U2 frontman Bono is hoping to generate more celebrity interest in his fight against AIDS in Africa - so one of the stars can take over the campaign from him.

The Irish rocker admits that while he's still passionate about the cause, he'd like a celebrity counterparts to replace him as the chief spokesperson in the fight to get more funding to battle the disease.

He says, "I really hope you won't have to listen to me doing this for very long. I hope other people will take it over, like Ashley Judd, an incredibly elegant spokeswoman, brilliant actress.

"And Chris Tucker - he has been to Africa four times. African Americans are really getting interested. Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs comes up to me: 'You want me to do anything for you, say anything that you can't?' I appreciate that.

"Tiger Woods said, 'If there's anything I can do, I want to be part of this.' So hopefully, they will take up where I left off.

"I keep expecting people to say, 'Aren't you Irish?' and 'Would you mind just going home?'"

Today is National Call-In day for global AIDS. Call the white house 202-456-1111 (the hotline is only open from 9am-5pm EST by the way). Tell President Bush that you support the United States spending $3 billion on global AIDS this year, including $1billion for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria. Tell the President to deliver on his promise for this funding without taking the money from other health and development programs.

The Irish rock star Bono will urge President Bush Tuesday to spend $1 billion more in the first year of Bush's five-year plan to fight AIDS in Africa and the Caribbean. In a meeting Monday with USA TODAY editors and reporters, Bono said the president should push for the additional $1 billion. Bono's organization DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) estimates the $1 billion could prevent 1.6 million HIV infections in Africa.

Bono also said quickly helping Africa will prevent "10 more Afghanistans" by lessening the chances of the AIDS crisis turning the continent into a breeding ground for international terrorists.

When the president unveiled the $15 billion program in his State of the Union address last January, he said that it would prevent 7 million HIV infections in Africa and the Caribbean, treat 2 million HIV-infected people and care for 10 million HIV-infected individuals and AIDS orphans. Nearly 30 million Africans have the AIDS virus.

DATA and a number of other organizations, including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, will call today for the $3 billion commitment. This week, DATA radio ads featuring actress Ashley Judd will urge lawmakers to "Keep America's Promise to Africa."

She steps out of her dress, stands in a slip of ivory satin and lace."

Now that's a moment — from Tennessee Williams's stage directions in the opening scene of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" — to look forward to, especially because the she in question will be Ashley Judd. As the titular Maggie the Cat, Ms. Judd will be smoldering in the direction of another Hollywood sexpot, Jason Patric, who plays her recalcitrant husband, Brick, and spends much of the play in silk pajamas. With Ned Beatty as the patriarchal Big Daddy, fomenting about "mendacity," the production, which begins previews on Oct. 9 at the Music Box Theater, has the fall's most cinematic cast. And with Ms. Judd and Mr. Patric, it should also give Broadway what it doesn't get often enough — a blast of steam.
