Is it too early to talk Oscar, even before the cameras have started rolling on a film...
Judd returns to New Orleans for filming, but the material dictates perhaps a more circumspect persona off-the-set as the job at hand is likely to be draining, gripping, all-enveloping.
As the lead actress in the movie adaptation of Tracy Letts' Off-Broadway hit "Bug," Judd steps into a role and a film that runs from disturbing to brutal to psychotic.
It's got domestic violence, stalking, crack-smoking, conspiracy theorizing, mental torture and rough sex. And hallucinations. Of bugs. Hence, the title.
"It's a small budget movie, but big in terms of ideas and artistic value," the production rep said. "You always hope to hit that magic formula and make a fantastic movie and everyone is doing this one because they have a passion for the material. That's always a good sign."
Passion, yes. But is Ashley Judd really willing to give it all for William Friedkin and "Bug?"

Ashley Judd wasn't there to see her husband, Dario Franchitti, win last night's Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway, but the local favorite still had one of his favorite ladies on hand to lend support.
While Judd filmed a movie in New Orleans, Franchitti's mother, Marina, traveled from Scotland to be there when he needed her most.
"I did a whole lot of praying,'' Marina said. "Especially when it started raining. That's why it stopped raining — God was good to us today.''
Perhaps it was divine intervention that Franchitti needed. The victory put an end to a frustrating stretch for the 32-year-old driver, who's been close many times this season but unable to close the deal...
The win moved Franchitti into third place in the points standings....
Franchitti regrets that Judd wasn't there to help celebrate, but was proud he could win not too far from their home in Franklin.
"I've been living here for a while now and I feel like I've become a part of this community," he said. "It's a great place, what can I tell ya?''

Ashley Judd has been left scarred for life after filming a harrowing documentary about Madagascar's young prostitutes for MTV.
The actress agreed to fly out to the African nation to report on the problem after hearing how teenage hookers slept with men, who often refused to wear contraception, in make-shift streetwalk shacks.
And she discovered the sex industry was as dark as she'd feared, leaving her visibly shaken during scenes in upcoming film TRACKING THE MONSTER.
She says, "I thought I couldn't be shocked any more. I can be moved, I can be distressed but I can't be shocked; I've seen it all. Bullcrap.
"They (hookers) have sex with their clients on the sidewalk under a piece of plastic they have pooled their resources to buy".
Judd goes on to report that relief groups fear Madagascar will become the site of the next AIDS epidemic because unprotected prostitution is so rife as 70 per cent of the nation is forced to live below the poverty line.
